MTN Nigeria within the week, won the Ookla’s Speedtest Award™ for Fastest Network. The ward is based on Speed Score™ and provides a measure of a network’s throughput and responsiveness. It combines download and upload speeds with latency metrics to give an overall view of speed performance.
Giving insights on the award, the CEO of Ookla, Stephen Bye, said “After conducting an in-depth analysis of consumer-initiated tests taken with Speedtest, MTN has been named the Fastest 5G Network in Western Africa by Ooklaʼs Speedtest Awards, this award is given to the mobile network operator that demonstrates exceptional speed and performance in comparison to other major mobile networks in Western Africa for Q1-Q2 2025. We are thrilled to acknowledge MTN for this achievement, which is the result of their unwavering focus on delivering a superior network experience to their customers.”
On the methodology used in deterimining the winners, Bye explained that “Western Africaʼs Fastest 5G Network” was determined by evaluating regional providersʼ Speed Score™ in Q1-Q2 2025. To determine the fastest providers for 5G networks, Ookla assesses the Speed Score from all test results taken by devices capable of using a 5G network and only on a 5G connection type. To be designated as a top provider, the operatorʼs Speedtest results must account for at least 3% of the sample size in their geographic areas. Only providers that have won a national-level Speedtest Award™ for the same category and period are eligible to win a regional award.
Speed Score provides a measure of a networkʼs throughput and responsiveness. It combines download and upload speeds with latency metrics to give an overall view of network performance. Speed Score uses data from various metrics, including 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles of download and upload throughput and loaded latency. We place the most emphasis on the download speeds and median speeds as those represent what most network providersʼ customers will experience on a day-to-day basis.
“Western Africaʼs Fastest 5G Network” acknowledgement, as well as the reports contained within the Speedtest Intelligence® Portal, represent Ooklaʼs view of our data using the science and methodologies that go into benchmarking networks. With over 11 million consumer-initiated tests taken daily on Speedtest®, Ookla provides invaluable insight into the performance, quality and accessibility of networks worldwide. As the preferred data provider for telecommunications operators, regulatory bodies, trade bodies, analysts, journalists, universities, nonprofits, and government agencies, Ookla helps these organizations to fully understand the state of networks worldwide, by location and provider.
