First set of Nigerian currency minted in 1959
Following the establishment of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 1958, on Wednesday July 1, 1959, the first Nigerian currency was issued in denominations of pounds, five shillings, and ten shillings.
Otherwise, the establishment of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1958 marked a significant milestone in the country’s monetary history. Subsequently, on July 1, 1959, Nigeria issued its first official currency, consisting of denominations in pounds, five shillings, and ten shillings. These currency units remained in circulation until 1972.
