…NLC Suspends Strike
Whereas the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has canceled its planned protest scheduled for March 1, 2025, following an agreement with the Federal Government to reduce the previously proposed 50% telecom tariff increase to 35%, none of the Main Network Operators (MNOs) or even the lead regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reacted as at press time today, Friday, February 28, 2025.
However, just as the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), which urged the government and telecom operators to introduce further relief measures for consumers has welcomed the slash, networks who had jerked up their tariffs are yet to begin adjustments.
Business Hilights recalls that on January 20, 2025, the NCC announced a 50% increase in telecom tariffs—the first major adjustment in over a decade.
The increase was driven by inflation, rising operational costs, and currency depreciation. Telecom operators had initially pushed for a 100% hike before the government intervened.
After negotiations between the NLC and the Federal Government, a compromise was reached, reducing the tariff hike to 35%. A 10-member committee was established to finalize the agreement.
