Pursuant to technology-driven revenue collection in Imo State, the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, and Investment has partnered with the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS) to train its staff and market executives on digital revenue generation. The two-day workshop, held on February 11th and 12th, 2025, marked a significant step toward improving efficiency and accountability in the state’s markets.
In his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Investment, Chief Barr. Rex C. Anunobi, emphasized the importance of the training during his opening address. He explained that the workshop aimed to equip participants with the skills needed to implement digital revenue collection systems. These participants will then train others, creating a ripple effect of knowledge and efficiency across the state.
He highlighted that the adoption of modern technology would not only streamline revenue collection but also significantly increase the state’s income. “This training is a game-changer,” he said. “By embracing digital tools, we can ensure transparency, reduce leakages, and boost revenue for the benefit of all.”
Speaking, the Executive Chairman of the IIRS, Hon. Justice R. Okoye (FCA), reinforced the importance of the initiative. He urged participants to move away from outdated methods and embrace the new digital systems. “The old ways have their flaws,” he stated. “This new approach will ensure that every revenue collected is properly documented and accounted for, leaving no room for discrepancies.”
The workshop also included staff from the Imo State Ministry of Transport, addressing previous clashes between the two ministries over revenue collection in the field. This collaborative approach aims to foster harmony and ensure a unified system for revenue generation.
The training concluded on a high note, with words of encouragement from Comrade Sir Iwu Basil E. (JP), the Technical Assistant to the Commissioner. Mrs. Orji Ebere C., the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, delivered a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and facilitators for their commitment to the state’s progress.
This initiative marks a new era for Imo State, as it embraces technology to drive economic growth and ensure transparency in revenue collection.
