Barely few days after the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo structured a rare security structure to fight criminality in the state which is clearly belated because of the closeness to an election season, Chairman of the United Nigeria Airlines and prominent politician, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, has said that the security outfit “offers no hope” for Anambra people “because it is (Soludo’s) political campaign platform, made up of his political thugs.”
The Sun Enterpreneur of the Year 2020 said “Soludo has been governor for three years, and just remembered to tackle insecurity,” asking “why now?”
Reacting to the launch of the security outfit code named “Operation Udo Ga Achi” (literally translated as “Operation Peace will reign”), Prof. Okonkwo said it is rather “Operation Soludo Ga Achi (translated to Soludo will rule again”).
Although the popular Anambra entrepreneur cum politician admitted the launch of the security outfit was “better late than never,” he wondered why the governor waited after so many had died before tackling the scourge.
He said the governor will be remembered as “Governor of Sorrow and pain.”
Describing the governor’s speech at the launch of the outfit as “full of Soludo’s typical rhetorics and promises on security after three years in office,” the Dikeora Idemili said it “offered little or no actionable points,” describing it as “the highest level of insincerity and insensibility.”
It would be recalled that following spiralling insecurity, which had gripped Anambra State for years, leading to many deaths, rising cases of kidnapping, robberies, cultism and sundry crimes, Governor Soludo launched the outfit to check the activities of criminal elements and restore the people’s confidence in government’s ability to protect life and properties.
As excited as the people are with the launch of the security outfit, fears are being expressed in certain quarters that, considering that this is an election year in the State, the Governor may surreptitiously be planning to use the outfit to prosecute his election campaign.
Some are worried that the activities of the governor’s revenue and traffic agents leave them in doubt about the impartiality of the new outfit.
But to give a legal backing to the outfit, the House of Assembly also quickly passed the New Anambra Security Law, which empowers the new outfit to go after criminals and their sponsors wherever they are found.
