The management of NAMTOP has formally written a petition on the extortion activities of members of the Road Transport Employer’s Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in connivance with officials of the State Ministry of Transport.
In a petition captioned: ‘RE: REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ROAD TRANSPORT EMPLOYER’S ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (RTEAN) ON EXTORTION, HARASSMENT, AND INTIMIDATION WITH THE CONNIVANCE OF THE LAGOS STATE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION,’ addressed to the Lagos State Ministry of Justice on Friday, January 10, 2025, the document signed by the NAMTOP PRO, Rahmon Folorunsho and made available to Business Hilights, the group wrote as follows;
“I am writing to report the activities of the Road Transport Employer’s Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) on extortion, harassment, and intimidation with the connivance of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation. These actions may lead to a breakdown of law and order within the state.
“As the National Association of Maritime Transport Operators (NAMTOP), we are not members of RTEAN. However, we have observed that the association, with the support of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, has been using an illegal Lagos State revenue ticket to extort money from our members and other road transport operators.
“The said revenue ticket is subject to litigation at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja. Despite this, RTEAN and the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation continue to use the ticket to extort money from road transport operators. This action is unacceptable and unlawful.
“We have also received reports of harassment and intimidation of our members by RTEAN officials with the connivance of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation. These actions are not only illegal but also pose a threat to the peace and security of the state.
“We urge the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to investigate these activities and call RTEAN and the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation to order. We believe that the actions of these organizations are a threat to the peace and security of Lagos State and should not be condoned.
“We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
