In keeping with his resolve to reactivate the three ‘R’ declared at the end of the Nigeria-Biafra Civil war and redevelop South East, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, signed a Bill for an Act to establish the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
The legislation, initiated by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, was ratified by the House in December 2023.
Subsequently, the Bill was concurred by the Upper Legislative Chamber in May 2024 and was transmitted to the President for approval.
In response, the Deputy Speaker, Kalu, expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for endorsing the SEDC bill, thereby authorizing the establishment of the commission.
The bill aimed to institute a commission tasked with managing funds from the federation account allocation for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure damaged during the civil war aftermath over 54 years ago.
The commission will also address ecological issues and other environmental or developmental challenges in the Southeastern States, encompassing Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Livinus Nwabughiogu, the delighted Kalu extended his heartfelt appreciation to President Tinubu, his fellow legislators, and the entire Nigerian populace for their support of the bill.
He also conveyed the gratitude of all Ndigbo from the South East region, ensuring them of increased positive attention from the President.
