For more than eight months and exactly since the beginning of the second tenure of President Muahammadu Buhari on May 29, 2019 which returned him as the Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi had been so much preoccupied with issues surrounding the delivery of the Lagos-Ibadan rail project.

Since last year, the minister had given Nigerians not less than four delivery dates for the scheme, but no one had worked, rather he has linked the delivery failure to coronavirus outbreak.

According to him, the ongoing construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan rail project has been put on hold due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the Federal Government declared on Thursday.

Answering questions in a national TV programme, Chief Amaechi observed that the employees of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the contractor handling the project, were still in China on the orders of the government of the Asian nation.

According to him, “If not for coronavirus we would have finished the Lagos-Ibadan rail, although the project is nearly completed. The CCECC workers are still in China.”
