Discos’ poor installations, constructions behind rising consumers’ electrocution

The true cause of momentary electrocution of Nigerian electricity consumers’ have been identified and stringent measures and regulation introduced by the Federal Government to tame the scourge going forward.

Otherwise, the Federal Government is officially considering the prosecution of power distribution companies (DisCos) and individuals, who violate regulations by way of poor and substandard electrical installations and construction in the country.

Giving clear view of the new Nigerian Electrical Installations and Construction Guidelines Manual for the distribution sub-sector, designed by Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Minister of Power, Sale Mamman averred that henceforth, Discos involved in electrical installations that ended up injuring or causing fire, death and destruction of properties shall face the law.

Statistics released by NEMSA during the launch showed that Discos’ poor wiring and unprofessional installations had killed over 366 Nigerians due to electrocution in 2017, as human-induced factors reportedly killed another 42 persons in 38 fatal accidents caused by faulty systems in the electricity distribution arm of the power sector in the first five months of 2018.

Managing Director of NEMSA, charged with the responsibility ensuring efficient, stable, safe and reliable networks for electricity supply across the country, Peter Ewesor, said the guidelines would harmonise specifications, standards, and designs.
