Less than one week after some host communities in Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State staged a protest against some International Oil Companies (IOCs) over continuous environmental pollution including gas flaring, in Akwa Ibom, Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risk Reduction (NAPPDRR) is set to drag ExxonMobil and Frontiers Oil to court over alleged flaring gas and endless oil spillage.

Briefing journalists in Uyo, the State capital, President of the group, Alhaji Al-Mustapher Edoho observed that the action has became necessary after its petition to the companies for records of mitigation did not yield any result.

He explained that “We petitioned the oil firms demanding records of mitigation system to cushion the effects of gas flaring, oil spills and other environmental effects and what we got as responses are not satisfactory to us.”

While blaming the state government for being insensitive to the plights of the people of the oil bearing communities of Onna, Ibeno, Eket and Esit, the Non Governmental organization (NGO) vowed to join the state government in the suit designed to seek lasting redress from years of negligence and environmental pollution.
