…Hands over one to GSS, Damaturu, Yobe State
In line with its leading Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platform, the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) in use throughout its host communities and Nigeria in general, Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) in partnership with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Famfa Oil Limited, Statoil Nigeria Limited, and Petroleo Brasileiro Nigeria Limited have donated a science laboratory complex to Government Secondary School, Damaturu, Yobe State.
The completion, furnishing and donation to the school in Yobe State marked the 34th Science Lab built and given out to Nigerian secondary schools to deepen science education.
Details from Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, a subsidiary of Chevron representing the oil firm in the partnership, the science laboratory complex given to schools is a gesture tailored to stimulating students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Business Hilights recalls that the five oil and gas companies operate as partners in the Agbami oil field in the Niger Delta.
Explaining more at the official handover of keys and documents of the complex to the Yobe State Government officials in Abuja, the Director, Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, Richard Kennedy, said the project reflected the determination of the Agbami parties to help improve the availability and affordability of quality education to Nigerians.
Represented by the Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria, Mr Mike Kabi, Kennedy averred “The project is expected to have huge impact on the students because it will provide them with up-to-date science laboratory equipment for undertaking experiments and writing their examinations.”
Responding while receiving the keys, Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, hailed the Agbami partners for the project, which he said aligned with the state government’s commitment to delivering quality education to the people of the state.
Also speaking, the Group General Manager, NAPIMS, an NNPC’s subsidiary, Roland Ewubare, said the five oil firms would continue to improve the quality of education and healthcare in Nigeria through the provision of infrastructure.
He said the projects, which were mainly libraries, chest clinics, science laboratories, model classroom blocks and mother and child centres, constituted an aspect of the strategic intervention plan of the Agbami parties in promoting national well-being.
He further hinted that the parties apart from building and handing over 34 science laboratories to schools nationwide, the group plans to complete additional two within the year.
Besides, the Agbami parties are working on the Agbami Medical Engineering and Professional Scholarships which supported thousands of Nigerian students to pursue academic programmes in sciences field in tertiary institutions.
