All is getting set for the delivery of Apapa-Wharf Road being reconstructed by AG Dangote Construction Group powered by donations from Dangote group, Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) Plc and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
At the height of collapse of the road which has been the nation’s gateway as it leads to the nation’s flagship port, the President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote raised the bar of his selfless service and embarked on the reconstruction of the road with supports from few other companies on the road including FMN and the port regulator, the NPA.
Checks by Business Hilights on the extent of works on Monday showed that over 95 per cent of the work is completed.
A lot of truckers and port business operators including motorists who spoke on the road hailed the decision of Alhaji Dangote to showcase the beauty of concrete road over asphalt.
The position of the would-be-road-users tallied with what the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said during the commissioning of similar concrete raod also donated by Dangote in Ogun State.
Dangote Group had few months after the resumption of cement production at its dual production lines Ibeshe plant in Ogun State built a 28-km Itori-Ibeshe concrete road in Ogun state.
Speaking at the inauguration, Fashola “It is historic in the sense that this is the first time a road of this size will be constructed in Nigeria using cement concrete.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, urged the government to review the existing method of road construction in the country which has over time placed undue emphasis on asphalts.
He said that concrete roads were more durable than asphalt roads, revealing further that concrete roads were about 20 per cent cheaper than conventional asphalt roads and lasted longer with no potholes.
Business Hilights gathered that the road was constructed by AG-Dangote as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects
AG-Dangote Construction Company therefore used the occasion to call on governments at all levels to invest more in rigid pavement for road construction.
The firm maintained that globally, concrete roads are more affordable, durable, safer and stronger.
Explaining more, representative of the AG-Dangote, Mr Tunde Jimoh, gave the maximum life cycle of flexible pavement known as asphalt road as about 20 years and that of a rigid pavement or concrete road as 40 years or more.
“The pavement type chosen depends on a number of factors which include expected traffic wheel load, load repetition, cost of construction, and maintenance,” he said.
He said the AG Dangote was constructing the longest concrete road in the country located in Kogi State.
He said the road, known as Obajana-Kabba Road, is a 43 kilometre concrete road project due to be inaugurated in December while the other the 24km Itori-Ibese concrete road has since been delivered.
Jimoh, who is the company’s project manager, said the firm, would also deliver the concrete dual carriage Apapa-Wharf Road in Lagos this month.
“This vision of the development of concrete roads in Africa is being shared by more leaders and governments. The implementation of concrete roads can revolutionise infrastructural development in Nigeria and Africa as a whole,” Jimoh averred.
