Telecoms industry stakeholders are beginning to see apparent cold feet on the side of the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in the real gazette of the policy of Data Roll-over, more than one month of giving the signal.
Experts who bared their minds on the subject said there is no need in delaying the introduction of the policy because networks had been ripping off data subscribers profusely on a daily basis.
According to NCC, the planned policy will afford subscribers access to their data up to 14 days after expiration.
But observers fear that NCC though, had been working for months to issue a directive to telecommunications operators to give 14 days’ window to subscribers to enable them to roll over their unused data, the apparent lack of action may be traced to pressure from networks.
Already, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has welcomed the policy, saying members are ready to key into the scheme if introduced.
In an interview, the Chairman of ALTON, Mr Gbenga Adebayo, said that the period for data roll over was a commercial issue, which each telecommunications operator would determine how it suited its business plan.
In his further submission, ALTON boss averred that “The decision is left to the individual players. As an industry player; I think it is good for the subscribers”.
“If the data roll over grace makes the subscribers happy, I am certain that our members will align with the directive provided it does not impact on the existing cost,” Adebayo noted.
