Two leading players in the nation’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT), the Chief Executive Officer, Pinet Technology, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, and the Chief Executive Officer, MainOne Cable, Funke Opeke have opened up on the advantages of hosting websites in Nigeria.

In his response on why home hosting is better, the former president of Association of telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Ajayi, explained that the quality of service when websites were hosted in the country was better than those hosted within Nigeria.

Giving insights on the benefits of local hosting, he said websites with video content perform better when their servers were hosted in the country.

According to him, “The cost of hosting abroad is cheaper than the cost of hosting in Nigeria and businesses are looking for cost-effective service and that makes people to prefer hosting their services abroad. The service quality when you host abroad is not as great as when you host in Nigeria.

“When you host in Nigeria, because the website will now be closer to the user, the service quality will get better. Hosting in Nigeria comes with a huge advantage and low latency. If you are doing anything that has to do with videos, you are able to stream the video due to the low latency. It is now advantageous to host in Nigeria but the cost difference has to be worked on.”

However, Ms. Opeke expressed bitterly saying, despite incentives to encourage companies in its data centres to connect through the Nigerian Internet exchange, many had refused.

She revealed that the cost obtaining right of way also contributes to the high cost of bandwidth and web hosting in the country.
