Fulani herdsmen are at it again, this time, no killing but the police in Adamawa arrested 200 cows for invading a farmland at Yolde-Pate in Yola South Local Government Area.
Police spokesman in the state, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the development to Business Hilights, saying the arrests were made in Yola on Saturday.
According to him, “In collaboration with the district and village heads in the area and timely intervention of police and other vigilante members, the situation is now under control”.
He applauded the affected farmers for exhibiting maturity by not taking the law into their own hands.
Abubakar commended the herdsmen for accepting responsibility for the destruction caused by their cattle and their commitment to pay for the damages.
The affected farmers have been shortlisted for possible compensation, while the arrested cattle were handed over to the District Head of Yolde Pate for safe keeping.
The Police was however, silent on arraignment, but confirmed further that peaceful damage assessment and settlement of farmers are underway.
A top official of Adamawa State government, who pleaded anonymity in a telephone interview, said “this is the first time in Nigeria when such number cow arrests are made without any fight or killings.
The issue of farmers-herdsmen crisis had torn several states apart in recent times especially in Delta, Edo, Benue, Nasarawa and Niger States including Enugu where several villagers were massacred by assaults riffle welding Fulani herdsmen.
The excesses of the herdsmen have forced several states including Ekiti and Benue States to criminalize open grazing through a Bill that was passed by their States Assemblies.
