Considering the observed proliferation of substandard phones, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Thursday warned against use of fake digital products including phones.

Speaking during a stakeholders workshop organised by the Ibadan Zonal office of NCC at the popular Fayose GSM Market in Ado Ekiti, an official of the commission, Mr. Kunle Olorundare said use of substandard phones was responsible for some cancer ailments.

Though he did not give details on how to identify substandard phones, he lamented that fake phones had taken over the country’s phone market, saying the negative implications on the health of users.

Apart from substandard phones, NCC also identified unapproved phones as a major cause of network interruptions, stressing that preponderance of substandard phones was causing colossal damage to network services and health of users.

He therefore warned sellers of unapproved Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products against rampant disregard to the commission’s Act.

However, what worries many stakeholders is the inability of NCC to have successfully arrested and prosecuted dealers or sellers of substandard phones or non-type approved phones in the last over 14 years of the Commission’s Act.
