Demolition of Eke-Ukwu Owerri, the Imo State capital ongoing
One boy has been allegedly shot dead and so many others injured by security forces guarding the demolition of Eke-Ukwu Owerri today, Saturday, August 26 and latest report says serious confusion is unfolding across the hitherto sleepy metropolis of Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Before now, the State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha had given signals that the old and not well planned market will give way for a better development architecture that befits a capital city centre.
The traders had earlier been asked to relocate, but majority rejected the move, saying Eke-Ukwu Owerri remains a cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Owerri that cannot be moved elsewhere mainly because of their traditional religious inclinations and associated beliefs.
Besides, there are fears that whatever the government is wishing to situate there after demolition may not have the people as stakeholders’ after all.
