Contrary to speculations that leading GSM operator, MTN Nigeria may have jerked up the costs of its recharge cards without effecting same on face values of the denominations, it has denied the rumour, saying there was never an increase on the prices of its recharge cards.

This puts to rest, claims by recharge card vendors, who have been in the habit of confusing subscribers who want to purchase cards along the streets and markets.

Observers blamed MTN for coming out very late after several weeks of the illicit sales, because subscribers who patronize street vendors in buying recharge cards, have complained of the pains caused by illegal hike without recourse to the company.

Findings in some parts of Lagos State show that  the vendors sell recharge card of N100.00 value between N110.00 to N120.00 based on location, while N1000 recharge cards sells for N1020.00 and above.

However, advanced investigation showed that the vendor’s claim that what MTN give them par card is no more commensurate and that is why they add up a little to make up.

Adekunle Adebiyi, acting Sales and Distribution Executive of MTN made it clear that the cost of recharge cards remains the face value stated on the physical vouchers.

According to the official, “We hereby use this medium to inform all our subscribers that we have not increased the prices of our recharge cards. Any increment from any quarters across the country on our recharge cards is without our knowledge, and we urge all our customers to always pay the exact value advertised on the cards”.

Continuing, he averred that “While we are working assiduously to resolve claims of illegal increases, we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this might have caused. Alternatively, we advise our customers to explore other options of purchasing airtime such as MTN Virtual Top Up (VTU), Diamond Yello Account (DYA), or MTN Auto Top-up.
