Contrary to speculations in some quarters that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has become the main challenge in the process of power development in Nigeria, the company wholly owned by the federal government has reacted, saying it has done well in line with the Act establishing it in the last three years.
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Seun Olagunju, in an interview, said the capacity of the national grid has improved significantly in the last few years to about 6, 500 megawatts.
She said “As at the time of privatisation in 2013, the capacity of the grid hovered between 4, 000 and 4, 500 MWs, but now it is in the region of 6, 000 to 6, 500 MWs. If the capacity of the grid has not improved, how did TCN manage to evacuate and wheel out the 5, 074 MWs generated in 2015 which remains the highest so far in the history of the country?”.
She recalled that the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had been commissioning several transmission stations in parts of the country since last year to date around the country recent times.
Olagunju explained further that TCN recently directed electricity generating companies (Gencos) to reduce generation because of the interest of the dignity of the grid.
