Customs FOU Zone ‘A’ hits N2.05bn in Q1, assures continued fight against smuggling

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ Ikeja, Lagos has reported total income of N2,050,930,137.90 for the just ended first quarter of 2017.

A statement issued by Jerry Attah, Public Relations Officer for the Controller of FOU, Comptroller Haruna Mamudu said the feat was possible due to intensified anti-smuggling operations leading to the interception of  various contrabands and other goods on detention with a duty paid value (DPV) of 1,045,412,950.

The statement said the unit through its interventions recovered N1,005,517,187.90 from duty payments and demand notices on general goods that tried to beat the system from seaports, airport and border stations in the guise of false declaration, transfer of value, and shortchange in duty payment that are meant for the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In the first quarter of 2017, 293 different seizures were recorded comprising foreign parboiled rice, frozen poultry products, vegetable oil, smuggled vehicles, Indian hemp, arms, fake pharmaceutical/medicaments and various general merchandise.

In his remarks, Comptroller Mamudu commended his officers and men for the feat achieved in the first quarter of 2017 despite the economic recession.

He warned Nigerians to desist from investing in illegal businesses capable of ruining their lives/

He assured that his command will continue to in the fight against smuggling which he said has wrecked a lot of havoc to the nation’s economy.
