Julius Berger mobilizes to site as Abuja Airport gets closed midnight Tuesday
Barring any last minute directive from above, all is set for the closure of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, from midnight on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
The public awareness and stakeholders’ notifications had been completed before now.
The closure which up till now failed to receive unanimous acceptance according to the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Serika is to enable the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), carry out major rehabilitation of the runway at the airport.
FAAN’s managing director, Saleh Dunoma, confirmed this in a statement while confirming that the Kaduna International Airport would serve as the alternate from March 8.
He said “Normal operations will re-commence at the Abuja Airport on April 19’.
FAAN boss therefore appealed to airline operators, passengers, airport users and other stakeholders to bear with the FAAN, saying it would continue to upgrade facilities at the nation’s airports.
The repairs and closure was to comply with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) annexes.
Already, capacity expansion and adhoc provision of infrastructure at the Kaduna Airport had been completed according to checks by Business Hilights correspondent in Abuja who visited the Kaduna Airport weekend.
