Anxiety as Nigeria records twin deportations from 2 African countries in 2 days
First was the deportation of 47 Nigerians from Mali on Sunday night and this was successively followed by South Africa who deported 97 Monday evening at the wake of xenophobic attacks.
Otherwise, a total of 144 Nigerians were deported from both Mali and South Africa for civil and criminal offences by a chartered flight.
Details from the Immigration showed that whereas the mali issue was more of personal decisions and efforts of NAPTIP in halting human trafficking, six of the South Africa deportees were returned into the country for drug offences; 10 were arrested and deported for criminal offences while others committed immigration offences in the South Africa.
The deportees comprising 95 males and two females landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at night on Monday with a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg, South Africa. The deportees are 95 males and two females.
Those deported for drug and criminal offences were immediately handed over to police for further prosecution while others with civil cases were left to go home after profiling by the officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the airport.
