Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has announced more innovative activities lined up as part of activities to commemorate its 100 years of existence.

Latest part of the programme include the launch of an initiative called, ‘Centenary Innovation Challenge’, designed to develop impactful, and profitable ideas that will address the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on financial inclusion, agriculture and food security, and education.

Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Mr. Emeka Emuwa, who announced the launch of the initiative at a news conference in Lagos, said the programme was being implemented in partnership with Co-Creation Hub.

He said the scheme will provide support for young technology startups and new businesses which will be tailored to drive financial inclusion.

Emuwa said, “We are 100 years old this year. And what we want to do is to commemorate that. We have a lot of stakeholders who have contributed to our growth all these years, no doubt about that. Our customers, employees and shareholders made all these happened in the last 100 years. Those are the people we celebrate.

“Union Bank is leading from the front, and one of the ways we are doing this is our strategic commitment to people and enterprises that can directly impact their communities. We also believe that we cannot achieve this change alone, which is why our partnership with Co-Creation Hub is important.”

According to the head of Group Corporate Strategy of Union Bank, Lola Cardoso, the bank’s focus on citizenship and sustainability in developing and impacting the society encouraged the 100 years financial institution to take the giant step.

She said “As we think about the future, there is no way we would be talking about anything else but citizenship sustainability and innovation. What does that mean for us? Citizenship means for us our participation in the community around agriculture, and sound development in what the bank has engaged in terms of youths, sports, talent and art.”
