Traffic relief coming as Tin Can Island Truck Park delivery gets December date
Strong indication emerged weekend on the chances of the hellish traffic gridlock on port access roads in Apapa becoming a thing of the past by December this year as all is set for the delivery of Tin Can Island Truck Park.
Giving the cheerful indication weekend, the chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Kabiru Gaya whose team was on oversight function, said the contractor of the Truck Park, Borini Prono, had assured on December delivery date.
According to him, the completion of the truck park, will among other things, ease off articulated vehicles currently causing nuisance on Lagos bridges and major roads and end traffic congestion across the Apapa axis and the entire Lagos state in general.
It would be recalled that since this year, there had been serious rise in traffic congestion on all roads leading to the Apapa ports caused by the overbearing influence of indiscriminately parked trucks and tankers on highways.
The lawmaker revealed that the contractor had assured Nigerians that delivery had reached about 97 per cent completion while construction of the shoreline, recently added to protect the park, had commenced.
Gaya averred that “When we visited this site in 2015, the construction was less than 70 per cent; now it is 97 per cent because money has been paid and we insist that it must be finished by December.
“We have also said that the facilities are not good enough for a trailer park; there should be more toilets, restaurant and even a small clinic.”
On the speed of work at the ongoing cement concrete two-kilometre road from Apapa port being constructed by AG Dangote, he also hinted that delivery of the road is sure by year end.
However, Gaya noted that the Leventis Bridge, which is expected to be completed by Julius Berger by the first quarter of 2019; and the Third Mainland Bridge, which would be partially closed in 2019 for rehabilitation will be given speedy delivery so as to deepen ease of doing business in parts of Lagos State.
Business Hilight gathered that other highways currently being reconstructed that were toured by the Senate Committee included the Ikorodu-Sagamu Road being handled by Arab Contractors with a completion date of 2021, and the 1.5km NNPC Mosimi Access Road, which had been stalled by a debt of N1bn.
He was silent on how the debt would be repaid or whether the cost was contained in either the 2018 or the coming 2019 budget.
