The Comptroller General of Nigerians Customs, Hameed Ali, in Lagos on Thursday, announced the his leadership will open discussions with the Ambassador of Turkey over a syndicate smuggling in arms and ammunitions to Nigeria in the last eight months.
Addressing journalists at the Enforcement Unit of the Tincan Customs Command, Apapa while displaying a total number of 470 Pump Action guns seized from a container concealed with plumbing pipes and joints, Ali revealed that it has become clear that a syndicate that do not want peace in Nigeria is behind the criminality which seems to be growing with ease in the last eight months.
He said his administration has strengthened intelligence units of all Port commands of the Nigerian Customs and land border posts.
Ali further disclosed that henceforth, every consignment coming from Turkey will be given extra examination so as to frustrate the syndicate, noting that Customs Intelligence operatives are closing on the gun import syndicate.
On other seizures, he disclosed that the cases are in court and the Service is optimistic that justice will soon be served on the suspects.
On the issue of functional scanners, Ali who was economical with words said whereas Customs continue to wait for new scanners, he has directed that scanners that can be refurbished are being repaired so as to complement the ongoing 100 per cent examination of containers.
