Telecoms operators’ ready for June 26 commencement date for data rollover, but…
Nearly one week after the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has directed all operators in the telecommunication industry to begin data rollover from June 26, checks by Business Hilights Intelligence Unit (BHIU) across leading telecoms have shown their readiness to comply.
Data rollover is a policy that allows subscribers remaining data before the expiration of given time to still remain with the subscriber that being forfeited pending when next the subscriber will subscriber again to add up with the new data bundle.
Before this new directive from the NCC, subscribers’ unfinished or unused data subscription automatically became useless to them as soon as it hit the expiry date.
Though a number of the telecoms players (names with held) have strong reservation against the directive, they noted that upon take off, they will continue to make case against the trade policy regarding its chances of frustrating business plans of their companies.
Already, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof Garba Umar Danbatta, who made it clear to all operators at the 95th consumers outreach programme in Dutse, Jigawa State, warned that failure by the operators to start implementing the directive would attract N5m fine on each subscriber, which they failed to roll over.
Danbatta, represented by the Head of Information and Reference Unit of the commission, Alhaji Ismail Adedigba, said “The NCC has directed the telecom service providers in the country to begin the implementation of data rollover on June 26, 2018. They have been duly informed about this and they have also been given adequate time to prepare their networks for it.
“Failure to implement this will attract N5m fine on the first of failure on each sim card and N500,000 on each day that follows the first default date.
“All these are to ensure that the consumers’ rights, privileges and interests are adequately protected,” he said.
