Super Eagles suspends ‘Friendlies’, trashes Iceland 2-0, now 2nd in group

In a dramatic, enterprising and superlative display of tactical discipline, Super Eagles of Nigeria on Friday, suspended testing of players and allowed players to display their football intelligence in their traditional wings.

This rare bench decision led to the shocking of Iceland in a second half two un-replied goals to climb to second in Group D at the ongoing FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.

Lead speed winger and CSKA Moscow creative finisher, Ahmed Musa did the dual magic in record time from receiving on two occasions, volleys from the defence line.

The most needed win is coming after Eagles lost opening match to Croatia (2-0) who yesterday, shocked Argentina (3-0) to lead the group with six points.

With the win, Nigeria is now standing second with one match remaining with Argentina on Tuesday, June 26.

Besides, the two unreplied goals have earned the team $100,000 from Aiteo Energy Group, who had pledged $50,000 for each unreplied goals to be scored by the Super Eagles in the World Cup.

Analysts say with the courage displayed today, Super Eagles may beat Argentina to qualify for second round along with Croatia.

It would be recalled that leading football analysts had described the positioning of players and even pattern played with Croatia as continuing with friendly matches at World Cup finals as what the team did today was in total variance to what they did with Croatia and lost.

There are strong indications that the Eagles camp will go haywire today considering the presence of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Senator Godswill Akpabio and other lawmakers whose meeting with Russian parliamentarian coincided with today’s match.
