Indications have emerged that the current scarcity of cooking gas may not ease so fast as the recently acquired liquefied petroleum gas vessels of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Sahara Group, MT Africa Gas and MT Sahara Gas will berth in Houston, the United States, to convey their first consignment of gas to be delivered from March.
The high cost of gas in the last few months has mounted pressure on the forest resources as fuel wood and charcoal business has shut up due to soaring demand.
Whereas Tanzania who has similar cooking gas problem has issued executive order criminalizing feeling of trees for fuel wood purpose, Nigeria is yet to put down any protective measure for our dying forest resources.
Though Sahara Group has said the two vessels will address the lingering challenges associated with the supply of the LPG, it means that Nigerians will wait till ending of March or even early April.
In a statement, Sahara Group noted that MT Africa Gas had already taken the lead by commencing its maiden voyage, sailing towards the Caribbean/US Gulf Region, adding that Sahara Gas was due to follow suit.
