Ras Kimono, Delta State-born Reggae artiste dies in Lagos, Music industry mourns
Leading Reggae music maestro and Delta State-born Ukeleke Onwubuya popularly known as Ras Kimono is dead.
Business Hilights gathered that he was rushed to a private hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, before being taken to Lagoon Hospital in the Island while plans to fly him abroad was almost perfected.
The death which has thrown Nigerian music industry into mourning happened at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi where he was transferred ahead of his scheduled medical trip to the US on Saturday night.
The Rumba Style Reggae kingpin was during his life and time known for fusing his music with thick African beat and rhythm. Some of his singles include ‘Under pressure’, ‘We no want’, ‘Rumba Style’.
Kimono ruled the airwaves within the 1990s especially with his brand of reggae and dance style which held a massive appeal to the youths. He laced his lyrics with Jamaican Patois. In 1989, he and his band group, Massive Dread Reggae Band, released an album titled Under Pressure, the lyrics of which are still relevant till date.
The families when contacted said they are still in shocks even as the music leaders and government of Delta State are in shocks on the demise of their musical export, Ras kimono over the weekend.
