Ghanaian arm of the leading continental telecoms conglomerate, MTN Ghana, has hinted that it is investing a total of US$144.5 million to expand its operations in the country, to improve the quality of its services.
This was made public by the Corporate Services Executive of the Company, Ms. Cynthia Lumor, saying the aim is to increase network availability and modernization, service innovation and operational efficiency in service delivery.
Explaining issues during a recent Stakeholders’ and media forum held in Kumasi, she noted that the meeting was part of MTN’s policy of carrying stakeholders along and informing subscribers about its activities and future plans.
While revealing that MTN Ghana has lifted Ghana’s economy to the tune of employing about half-of-a million people, Lumor noted that in the last 10 years, the company had funded 142 major development projects to assist transform the lives of many across the country.
These were in the areas of education and health infrastructure, provision of water and sanitation facilities, skills development and capacity building.
However, the MTN Ghana’s Technical Manager, Dickson Amoung-Yam, complained about the growing theft of batteries at the company’s cell sites, describing the development as a huge challenge having lost revenue of $5.4 million over the last three years through these thefts.
He explained that the batteries had been serving as a back-up for the smooth operation of the cell sites and appealed for public support and cooperation to rein in those behind the criminal activity.
Within the period under review in Ghana operations MTN recorded 698 fiber cuts, resulting in the disruption of services to customers. This year alone, MTN Ghana had recorded 494 fibre cuts, even as it is stepping up work to add 54 new cell sites for its 3G network, while 33 new sites would also be installed for its 4G network.
