Int’l Court frees Ghana, blames Cote d’Ivoire on maritime border dispute
After six years of maritime boundary dispute between Ghana and its western neighbour, Cote d’Ivoire, filed at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Seas (ITLOS), the court has ruled that Cote d’Ivoire did not provide any evidence that the negotiations did not provide any meaningful outcomes.
The decision was read by Judge Boualem Bouguetaia, President of the Special Chamber.
Otherwise, the Chamber found that Cote d’Ivoire did not prove that Ghana has acted in bad faith in the matter. The court also found that Cote d’Ivoire has failed to enter into negotiations of any practical nature with Ghana.
Other rulings showed that the court also found in most instances of the allegations brought by Cote d’Ivoire that Ghana was not in violation.
The ruling which was relatively settled amicably stemmed from about six years of negotiations and 10 meetings as the court found that Cote d’Ivoire did not provide any evidence that the negotiations did not provide any meaningful outcomes.
