A new innovation that will change the narrative in power crisis hobbling telecoms in Nigeria has been introduced by Huawei at the AfricaCom 2017 conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
Giving insights on how the lithium-acid batteries can improve the harvesting of solar energy by as much as 40 per cent, and reduce fuel consumption costs by almost 70 per cent, Managing Director Huawei Technologies Nigeria, Mr. Frank Li, said the solution features intelligent management features by analyzing data from the solar panels, battery and generator set, to maximise the benefits derived from solar radiation.
According to him, the lithium batteries, called BoostLi, comes with more intelligent features like including central management tools that allow for remote checks on the system’s state of health, state of charge, and more. This feature alone helps operators cut down on hundreds of dollars required per site visit.
The new product is also coming with anti-theft advantage by locking up the system if disconnected from their central monitor after a user-defined period.
Business Hilights recalls that several networks had reported cases of battery theft in their cell sites and Base transceiver Stations (BTSs).
Li further noted that the BoostLi batteries have surpassed the industry standard for parallel output power with 15kW against 5kW, and further help operators maximize existing infrastructure investments by allowing for the mixing of intelligent lithium with legacy lead-acid batteries.
He gave an instance with the experience of Kenyan “Safaricom, one of East Africa’s major mobile network operators, who after severe cases of battery theft switched to the new product and has since rested issues with power at BTSs.
