How Abia Speaker, Kalu ordered Police to shoot armless FRSC officers on duty
More details have emerged on the shooting of about three officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials on duty at the Umuikaa/Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The offence of the officers who were on uniforms with their patrol van parked by road side according to eyewitnesses was simply flagging down the Sport Utility Vehicle his wife was travelling in, along the highway.
The vehicle which did not stop immediately was said to come back on reverse, only for a woman in the passenger seat in front, an officer of the Department of State Services (DSS) attached to the Speaker’s wife ran towards the officer who flagged the vehicle, held him by uniform and dragged him to the ground, accusing him of hitting their vehicle.
Recall that the FRSC van was stationary in the first instance.
There were allegations that the speaker’s wife allegedly joined the policemen to beat the official.
Whereas the confusion lasted, an eyewitness alleged that “One of them called the husband who is the Abia State Assembly Speaker, Chikwendu Kalu, whose village is nearby. He then came with some policemen”.
“He ordered them to shoot the armless officers who were sitting inside the patrol vehicle and mercilessly beat up the team leader.
“The policemen also forcefully opened the patrol vehicle and went away with the battery. They left the team leader and the other officials that were shot on the road. Other road users helped them to the hospital,” the eyewitness said.
However, when contacted, the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, confirmed the incident and added that the case had been “reported to the commissioner of police in the state for further investigations”.
As at 4.50PM on Sunday, a source in FRSC confided in Business Hilights that several bullet pallets had been removed from the injured officials who are said to be stable in undisclosed hospitals.
Efforts to get the view of the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu failed Sunday evening.
