ATCON to publish 100 personalities, corporate citizens shaping telecoms sector

As part of build up to the upcoming celebration of its Silver Jubilee, the leadership of the Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), has revealed plans to publish a compendium of top 100 industry personalities and corporate citizens that have over the years contributed in no small measure in growing the sector in the last 25 years.

Addressing the media at ATCON’s head office in Lagos on Monday, the President, Engineer Olusola Teniola said the idea was not only to recognize the experts, but to develop a living encyclopedia of movers and shakers of the industry for the sake of posterity.

He said when published, points of sales and distribution will include Nigerian embassies, leading MDAs, Nigerian higher institutions of learning and other designated places of interests.

Explaining more, Teniola added that already, several standing committees have been inaugurated and they have since started wide consultations across boards to make sure that both personalities and corporate citizens nominated are screened and adjudged suitable to be included in the list of the 100.

Teniola averred that “The proposed book is expected to have the following structure; The curriculum vitae (in an easy format) of the personalities; A brief historical background of how the company has led creativity in terms of the company’s services and products; The future plans of the company with respect to innovation and creativity; and the list of corporate social responsibility that the company has done in the past.

Other detaisl include the brief corporate profile and advert of the company and passport photograph of the personality in that organization and brief discuss on barriers that has constituted threats to creativity and innovation in the Nigeria telecom and ICT industry and proffer way forward

On why the idea was adopted by the leadership of ATCON, he said “The rationales include to put on record those who have contributed to the development of telecom and ICT in Nigeria; To chronicle the development that has taken place since the liberalization of the sector; and To give the incoming generation the opportunity to learn from the veterans in the telecom industry as well as to determine the future of ICT in Nigeria as barriers to creativities and innovation in Nigeria would exhaustively discussed in the book.

Continuing, Teniola added that “It is believed that the publication of this book would further encourage and inspire us as an institution to continue to intensify our advocacy drive in the Nigerian telecom and ICT ecosystem and continuous protection of the existing investment with the sole aim of attracting further investment into the sector as the proposed book is expect to chronicle all that these individuals and corporate organizations have done to grow the industry to where it is today and what they still plan to do in order to speed up the needed future development.

“The Association has taken cognizance of some of the players in the industry that have led innovation and creativity in the sector and their respective creativities have continued to attract both local and international attention in terms of investible funds.

Also contributing, the Ist Vice President of ATCON, Dr. Tony Nwosu added that apart from players, there are chances of inclusion in the list of top government policy makers whose actions or pronouncements truly gave strong leverage in the growth of the industry over the years and currently.

Giving additional insights, the Executive Secretary of ATCON, Mr. Bola Olude, called on the media to partner ATCON so that the packaging will be world class.

He said several media executives will be contacted in the course of the book production.

Though ATCON did not give the date of the presentation, the President, Teniola assured that the public presentation of the book will form the high point of the planned 25 years anniversary this year, 2018.

According to projected plan and time of action, the book is expected to be delivered from prints on Friday, March 30, 2018, while the launch will be in April.
