Asking APC governors to support Oshiomhole may backfire on Buhari’s ambition
The recent meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari state governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have come and gone, but the meeting held behind closed doors inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, may make or mar Buhari’s re-election bid.
This is based on the fact that if it works out, followers of the party’s current chairman, Chief John Oyegun may remain in the party with deep-seated anger and worries which may divide their attention ahead of 2019 general elections.
A Presidency official who spoke with newsmen on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the sole item on the agenda of the meeting was how the state governors will work towards the emergence of a former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, as the party’s next national chairman.
Business Hilights recalls that the party’s national convention where new members of the party’s National Working Committee will emerge has been slated for May 14 in Abuja.
There are clear indications that the party’s current chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, would be seeking re-election at the convention even though the President has resolved to support Oshiomhole’s candidature.
The presidency source said “The President called the meeting with the progressive governors to ask them to back Oshiomhole’s candidature. That’s the purpose of the meeting that is the president’s position”.
With the emerged twist from caucus meeting in Edo State by all South South APC leaders, there seems to be a clear disconnect between President Buhari’s meeting with APC governors and the Benin’s meeting that is marred with divisions and lack of concensus.
