Articulated vehicles, tankers grounding Lagos to a halt very soon—BH Survey
A study conducted by Business Hilights Intelligence Unit (BHIU), has discovered that “If the observed trend in the annexation of federal highways across Lagos State including bridges and flyovers by heavy duty vehicles continues till the end of December, business activities are likely to be grounded to a halt”.
The report released on Thursday in Lagos showed that “Virtually every federal highway in southern part of Lagos State have been taken over by lining of such vehicles, thus forcing other moving vehicles to endless traffic gridlocks”.
“The most disturbing is that many of the old and dangling bridges and flyovers are not left out which is a very dangerous time bomb waiting to explode.
“Businesses and business executives leaving in Lagos mainland and working in Lagos Island are getting over stressed daily while going to and fro work places.
“Every highway around Ijora-Costain axis, Mile 2-OShodi, Carter and Eko bridges and many other parts if not half of federal highways in southern part of Lagos are now under the wimps and caprices of tanker and container drivers.
In an interview with a top official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), under anonymity, revealed that “Our efforts to curtail the scourge are being hampered by orders and counter orders from above”. Though the official failed to define “Above as used”, checks at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation resulted in similar answer as those who agreed to speak to Business Hilights were economical with words on what is actually happening on Lagos highways since September this year.
However, some of the drivers who spoke to Business Hilights research team, blamed the situation on the inability of the federal government to complete the Truck Bay at Apapa which had been under construction since last administration and lack of any plan to build additional ones.
