Though negotiations are underway between Globacom and Benin’s telecommunications regulator, Autorite De Regulation Des Communications Électroniques Et De La Poste (ARCEP), industry analysts in Benin has observed that the withdrawn operating licence of Nigerian mobile telecoms company Globacom’s local unit is hanging the fate of over 2.1 million subscribers and the economy in the balance.
Glo had less than two years of the initial licence grossed 1.6m subscribers an indication that its server offerings were in high demand.
ARCEP had rested Glo’s licence renewal based on minor dispute over new terms and conditions for renewal after the expiration of the first licence.
Major aspect of the licence renewal according to intelligence gathered by Business Hilights was a hike which Globacom considered exorbitant.
The new terms of contract include an increase in the cost of the licence.
