The joint team of delegation from Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) who paid the Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Babatunde Fowler has given terms and conditions for a smooth administration tax from airlines operating in the country.
In their submission presented by the Chairman of AON, Capt. Nogie Meggison, they noted that whereas they have no issue with paying or collecting the statutory VAT for FIRS, but insisted that “there was need to take a look into the issue of fairness against their competitors, clarity on the automation as well as, a 30 days period to allow for invoicing, reconciliation and billing before payment”.
Responding, their host, Fowler disclosed that FIRS has already provided a soft landing by giving concession of two months payment structure to airlines to make their VAT remittances and give room for reconciliation.
FIRS chief further assured the support of his agency to grow domestic airlines in a way and manner to ensure that airlines remain in operations during these tough economic times while also meeting their VAT remittance obligations.
While agreeing that the nation’s airlines sector is need of support, Fowler revealed that the government in not out to make profit but to make life more comfortable for the people.
He however, sounded it loud and clear that issues bordering on tax exemptions are beyond FIRS because it has no such powers to give waivers.
