Even though 9Mobile is facing issues bordering default on syndicated $1.2bn loan with 13 banks in Nigeria, that did not deter it from appealing to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to review the industry’s spectrum assignment, data floor price and interconnect rates.

Before now, leading Internet Services providers (ISPs) including the managing director of Spectranet Limited, Mr. David Venn had been driving the appeal for the review of data pricing floor.

According to him, “Lack of a floor in a huge market like Nigeria cannot drive credible and healthy competition but only allows deep pocket telecoms to squeeze ISPs by calibrating their prices anyhow they like”.

“Competition is driven by enabling business environment which will spur investors to do more in network upgrade which will translate to better quality of service.

9Moblie executives lead by the managing director, Mr. Boye Olusanya had during a thank you visit to the regulator, appealed for the the review, saying it would go a long way to reposition the sector.

Olusanya also called for concessional foreign exchange access and national roaming service, among others “in order for 9Mobile to shore up its revenue and meet its financial obligations accordingly.”
