2019 Elections: 7,800,000 PVCs yet to be collected nationwide, 1.4m in Lagos alone
Investigations by Business Hilights Intelligence Unit (BHIU) on issues surrounding permanent voter’s cards (PVCs), have shown that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) currently has over 7,800,000 PVCs that are yet to be collected nationwide.
Out of the number, Lagos has about 1.4 million waiting to be collected ahead of the 2019 general elections.
On the ongoing voter registration, statistics show that South East is still trailing South South in the number of new registrants as North Central, North West and South West lead.
PVC was the very first technology introduced into the conduct of elections in Nigeria in 2015. The scheme gave room to use of smart card readers for voter identification and authentication process.
After the 2015 elections, about 12 million PVCs had remained in the electoral body’s custody.
However, technology analysts have faulted the INEC central system, saying it has not been incorporated with applications that can dictate double registration and underage voting.
